BATIK WORK

atik work has been around for the last half century in sub-saharan Africa. Brought in from Asia, it was the early colonialists that introduced this art form to the region. As time went on, the artists who learnt the process of batik work, were now left with a new skill and their own artistic abilities. Materials being readily and easily available, the batik artists found a new direction, less demanding of physical involvement as compared to carving, they had only to create.

Today, after almost 50 years, these artists not only adopted this art form but have become true master artists in this medium. From abstract to finely detailed work, these artists have so to speak, carved out their own niché. With African motifs and an age old artistic tradition, these artists encapsulate Africa in batik.

Batik is a timely process, involving layering of waxes and colors. From conceivement of the idea to finish, it is a labour of love and requires as much precision and attention to detail as would a sculpture. Some artists have taken it a step further by producing their own special dyes and colors. These dyes and colors are not available anywhere else in the world and are unique to Africa.
