ur extensive collection of sculptures exemplify the best of traditional and contemporary that Africa has to offer. Based on tradition, the sculptures are made in very much the same way they were made in pre-colonial days. Wood has always been the main medium due to the symbolism it carries.
In most African cultures, wood is a part of nature and represents life. It has been used as firewood, weapons, shelter, bowls and anything else that one would desire. It is no surprise then that wood is symbolic of life and the spirit of life. A finely chipped stone and a piece of branch were probably the first tools and medium of art work to come out of Africa.
Today not much has changed in the process, these artists use the wood symbolically to capture their thoughts, beliefs, visions and fears.
